Buduruwagala Rock Carvings
Buduruwagala translates simply as Buddha Image Rock.
Buduruwagala is a rock shrine that dates from the ninth or tenth century. It comprises of seven massive Buddhist sculptures carved into a 21-meter-high cliff, including a 15-meter-high image of Buddha. There is still some stucco plaster of the robe over the figure, as well as a lengthy stripe of orange around the head. The figurines used to be beautifully painted. The tallest Buddha statue, which stands 15 meters tall, stands in the middle.
