Galle Dutch Fort

Galle Dutch Fort is the main city on Sri Lanka’s southern coast, notable for its Dutch Fort and natural port.

The Galle Dutch Fort Dutch Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was originally erected in the 16th century by the Portuguese. On foot, the fort is a joy to explore. The fort is surrounded by majestic Dutch and British colonial structures, historic mosques, churches, and elegant residences. Some of these structures have been repaired and transformed into chic cafés, eccentric boutiques, and colonial-style hotels, while others have remained as dwellings.

Galle Dutch Fort was a thriving port, according to Ptolemy’s world map created in 125–150 AD, dealing with Persian, Arab, Greek, and Roman traders until the British transferred the primary port to Colombo City.

Most Sri Lankan travel itineraries include a visit to this historical site.
