Negombo has a strong historical Catholic impact as a result of its Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonizers. The southern part of the bay is home to the country’s major fishing port, while the northern part is home to the tourism sector. Probably the finest site in Sri Lanka to see the magnificent sunset near the beach.

Because Negambo beach is only 10 kilometers from the airport, it may be the start or end day of a Sri Lanka travel itinerary.

Negombo’s highlights include the Negombo Lagoon, the historic St. Mary’s Church, and the Fish Market.

  • Fishing Port and Fish Market

Though not a scenic location, it is a good site to watch the lifestyle of a tiny fishing town, but only in the early morning hours. The fishing harbor is one of the largest and oldest in Sri Lanka, and it is teeming with vessels of all sizes.

It is the largest estuary lagoon in Negombo, having a diverse aquatic habitat. The lagoon’s most popular attraction is boat riding, where you can see herons, egrets, gulls, cormorants, terns, and other shorebirds.

St. Mary’s Anglican Church is the largest church built in the style of Renaissance and Baroque architecture.
