In the second century BC, the Rajagala Buddhist monastery was founded.
The Rajagala Monastery complex has been recognized as one of three unique types of monasteries constructed around 2000 years ago. The monastery was built on a mountain, approximately 350 meters above sea level. Through the deep forest, there is a trail with stone stairways that leads to the natural and constructed cave houses on the summit.
Stupas, a Refectory, a Religious Observances House, two enormous Stone Bowls, a Hot Water Bath House, a Small Reservoir, Stone Walls, Paintings, and numerous more unexplained buildings all contribute to identifying the ancient construction technique and methods.
The ruins are spread throughout 400ha of natural woodland. It is now a national Archaeological Reserve.
