Ritigala Forest Monastery
Ritigala is a one-of-a-kind archaeological and ecological reserve.
It was designated a Strict Nature Reserve in 1941 because it contains a distinctive ecology rich in medicinal plants and rare fauna species. This mountain range has four peaks, the tallest of which is 766 meters above sea level.
The location with the 70 rock caves used to be a Buddhist monastic complex for hermit monks. The monastery’s remains and rock inscriptions date back to the first century BC.
The ruins cover an area of around 120 acres. In the rainforest backdrop, the long stone-lined meditational pathway with steps, old stone bathing ponds, courtyards, and other architectural relics provide tranquility.
