Unawatuna Beach on the southwest coast is the most stunning beach near the Galle Dutch Fort Dutch Fort. The golden sandy beach with blue dazzling water is flanked by fringed palm trees.
The beach is surrounded by a double reef, which reduces the impact of the waves of the Indian Ocean, making it excellent for safe swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Unawatuna is an excellent place to learn to surf as well.
There are several rental options for sunbeds, mats, and umbrellas, and also fancy restaurants, pubs, and shacks along the beach.
The Jungle Beach of west Unawatuna is a lovely bay with calm water. There is an outstanding pagoda known as Peace Pagoda on the hillside of the Jungle Beach. Another attraction nearby is the Yatagala Raja Maha Viharaya, a peaceful medieval rock temple with a reclining Buddha carved into a giant boulder and beautiful murals on the walls.
