The Vel Festival is one of the most well-known Hindu celebrations in Sri Lanka. The Vel Festival commemorates the triumph of good over evil by honouring the heavenly trident of the Hindu battle deity Skanda. Devotees take to the streets for many days throughout the event, with parades including chariots, musicians, acrobats, and Kavadi dancers. The event is usually held in July or August, with the major activities taking place in Colombo. Devotees in Colombo dress up in colourful clothes and march along Sea Street to the Hindu Temple in Colombo. The festivities will go on for a fortnight. Kataragama, in the southeast, is likewise held in high regard
