Chundikulam, a lagoon partly surrounded by mangrove swamps and seagrass began life as a bird sanctuary in 1938 and today it is a birders’ paradise. It is also home to mammals such as sloth bears, leopards, jackals and deer, as well as reptiles such as the mugger and saltwater crocodiles. The park contains salt marshes, wetlands, tanks palmyra and palm plantations, throny scrublands and other dry zone flora.
It was upgraded to national park status in 2012.
