Despite the island’s relatively small size with a 65610sqkm land area, Sri Lanka has extraordinarily rich biodiversity due to its vast variety of geographical and climatic variations. Conservation International has designated Sri Lanka as one of 34 global biodiversity hot spots.

Forests encompass around 30 percent of the country, and 13 percent of the land area is protected as national parks, reserves, sanctuaries, and jungle corridors. Surface water covers 1.5 percent of the island. Concerning its size, Sri Lanka may have the most waterfalls of any country in the world. Sri Lanka is an excellent place for exploring diverse flora and fauna. There are around 830 endemic species in the flora and 346 in the fauna.
